Mike Krol and Superchunk’s Mac McCaughan have joined forces as Mac Krol and shared a brand new tune, “For Some Different Purpose.” It’s the A-side to new seven-inch single due out July 28 by way of Merge. The 7-inch will even function the songs “Truthful Warning” and “What Would You Say?”

The collaboration started in 2015 when Krol and his bandmates had a recording session at San Francisco’s Tiny Phone after recording Turkey. Their finish product was “a handful of riffs and concepts.”

Krol says in a press launch: “The plan was to take the tough mixes residence and write lyrics to document them later. Nevertheless, as soon as I received residence and listened to the songs, I shortly realized that the majority of them had been within the mistaken key for my voice. So I filed them away to take care of later, and finally misplaced curiosity.” After unearthing the recordings through the pandemic, Krol emailed them over to McCaughan. “To my shock,” he says, “they sounded higher than I remembered, however nonetheless didn’t work with my voice. I emailed Mac the tracks and stated if he was bored in quarantine, perhaps he might write some phrases to sing on high of my instrumentals and probably give them a second life. He stated he hated writing lyrics and politely declined. A number of days later, three songs confirmed up with accomplished lyrics and iconic Mac McCaughan singing and shredding throughout them. I used to be blown away!”

“With out Mac,” Krol says, “these songs would nonetheless be discarded instrumentals, so I’m very grateful that he introduced them throughout the end line to allow them to lastly be heard!”

Krol’s final album was 2019’s Energy Chords. Take a look at our evaluation of it on our web site.
