Premiere: William Matheny Shares New Single “Each Means To Lose”
New LP That Grand, Outdated Feeling Due Out August 4th

Later this week, West Virginia singer/songwriter William Matheny is ready to return along with his new LP, That Grand, Outdated Feeling, due out on August 4th. The report is his follow-up to his 2017 album, Unusual Constellations, and sees Matheny exploring the forgotten corners of Appalachia, from truck stops and dive motels to portraits of the struggles of tour life. Main as much as the album’s launch Matheny has shared the title monitor and final month’s single, “Down on the Resort Canfield.” Right now, he’s again with one other new monitor, “Each Technique to Lose,” premiering with Underneath the Radar.
Itemizing influences like Magnolia Electrical Co. and Drive-By Truckers, “Each Means To Lose” finds Matheny roaring down the freeway in a shadowy rock mode. Matheny sings amidst churning rhythms and bitter piano accents, together with a careening guitar solo within the monitor’s again half. The monitor takes on a Springsteen-esque high quality, particularly with its character portrait of a born loser driving down a street to nowhere. But, Matheny’s vocals sound resolute and pushed, as if he’s going through off in opposition to inconceivable odds. He sings, “So some ways to be a winner, I wouldn’t know the way to decide on / And I’m not one to child a kidder, however I do know each option to lose”
Matheny says of the monitor, “The Wall of Jericho is a pure attraction in Alabama. I used to be 10 miles from there one night time driving again to Nashville after a gig within the Shoals. Thank god I wasn’t ten miles from someplace that’s inconceivable to rhyme like East Orange.”
