Toronto native Matthew Christakos has accepted a place because the Affiliate Principal Cello of the New York Philharmonic within the Paul and Diane Guenther Chair. His appointment was efficient January 2024.

Matthew started to play the cello on the age of 4. He went on to review music on the RCM’s Phil and Eli Taylor Efficiency Academy for Younger Artists. Throughout his time there, he received the concerto competitors, and carried out as a soloist with the Academy Chamber Orchestra. Different honours embody:

  • Winner of the 2019 Canada Council for the Arts’s Michael Measures Prize;
  • Second prize on the Canadian Music Competitors 2019

Matthew’s musical training included performing with the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Nationwide Youth Orchestra of Canada. He toured Canada and Spain as featured soloist with the NYOC.
